Our dear Kitamura kun!

Watashitachi no Tamura-kun (わたしたちの田村くん^?, lit. Our Tamura-kun, officially translated as either Tamura-kun of Ours or Our Dear Tamura-kun) is a two-volume Japanese light novel series by Yuyuko Takemiya, with illustrations by Yasu. The first volume was released on June 10, 2005, and the second followed on September 10, 2005, both published by MediaWorks under their Dengeki Bunko label. A manga adaptation by Sachi Kurafuji started serialization in the shōnen manga magazine Dengeki Comic Gao! on May 27, 2006, also published by MediaWorks. As of January 26, 2008, three bound volumes of the manga have been released, and the manga ended serialization on February 27, 2008. A radio drama was also produced based on the series, and a two-disc compilation of the drama was released on April 30, 2007.

Plot

Main story

Watashitachi no Tamura-kun's main story revolves around the title character Yukisada Tamura, who is in his third year of junior-high school when the story begins. Yukisada has become captivated by a strange girl named Komaki Matsuzawa who says that her birthplace was on another planet and she is trying to go back.^[1] One day, Yukisada confesses his affections to Komaki, but immediately following this, Komaki's grandmother dies and she has to move away. They both manage to keep in contact for a while by writing letters, though Komaki stops writing around the time of the high school entrance exams. When Yukisada enters high school, he becomes concerned with one of his female classmates named Hiroka Sōma.^[1] In junior-high, Hiroka was constantly bullied, which would cause her to stay home, eventually causing her to become isolated and helpless. Yukisada chooses not to ignore her like most of his other classmates, and instead starts encouraging her and helps her to build her self-esteem. Before long, Hiroka falls for Yukisada, and one day confesses her love to him. During this time, Yukisada has kept in contact with Komaki and has mentioned Hiroka in his letters. Thereupon, one day after a long time, a letter arrives from Komaki to Yukisada asking who exactly is Hiroka. Yukisada later faces a complicated situation involving his old love Komaki and his new love Hiroka.

Side story

The two-chapter side story entitled Takaura-sanchi no Kazokukeikaku (高浦さんちの家族計画^?) concerns Yukisada Tamura's good friend, Shinichi Takaura and his younger half-sister, Io Tamai. Io detests anything related to matters of love or affection and is very anti-social. Seeing this, Shinichi attempts to rehabilitate his half-sister in the matter of love.

Yukisada Tamura (田村 雪貞, Tamura Yukisada^?)

Yukisada is the protagonist of the story. At one point, he loved learning about bugs, but has since moved on to the manners and customs during the Kamakura period in Japan.^[1] The story begins with him in his third year of junior-high school. He falls in love with his classmate and friend Komaki Matsuzawa, and manages to confess to her one day. However, she moves away almost immediately after due to her grandmother's death. Yukisada lives in a five-person household with his two parents, and an older and younger brother. Basically, he is a frivolous person who easily gets carried away. His favorite meals are eel and home-made jiaozi. He finds inspiration from Hōjō Tokimune, though his dream is to be someone as great as Emperor Jimmu.

Komaki Matsuzawa (松澤 小巻, Matsuzawa Komaki^?)

Voiced by: Ryō Hirohashi

Komaki is Yukisada's classmate during their third year of junior-high school. During an accident when she was twelve, she lost both her parents and her older brother. Due to this, she turned very reserved and quiet. When she entered her third year of junior-high, she met Yukisada and little by little opened her heart to him. However, during summer vacation shortly after that school year began, her grandmother dies and she has to move away to a far distant relative's house. She is a very strange girl who says she was born on another planet and wants to go back.^[1] In school, she always gets top grades, and is on the track team at her school under the 200 meter dash event. Her favorite food is curry.

Hiroka Sōma (相馬 広香, Sōma Hiroka^?)

Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu

Hiroka is Yukisada's classmate during their first year of high school. While thought to be very beautiful, she acts cold towards others so most people leave her alone;^[1] she was given the nickname "Tundra Queen" due to her standoffish personality. During her junior-high school life, she was bullied constantly and even did not go to school for a year because of it. In high school during exam time, she gets help from Yukisada's older brother Nao as a tutor to go over things she learned in school. Some of her classmates from her junior-high still attempt to tease her, though Yukisada does his best to encourage her and help to build back her self-esteem. Due to this, Hiroka becomes quite attached to Yukisada and even one day confesses her love to him; eventually, Hiroka shares her first kiss with Yukisada. Hiroka is also very good at cooking.

Hachiya (蜂谷^?)

Voiced by: Eriko Fujimaki

Hachiya is the school nurse at Yukisada's high school. She likes to encourage Hiroka as well and indoctrinates Hiroka and Yukisada about various things. Her nickname in school is "unripe fruit" (青い果実, Aoikajitsu^?).

Shinichi Takaura (高浦 真一, Takaura Shinichi^?)

Voiced by: Atsushi Kisaichi

Shinichi is a good friend of Yukisada and they have known each other at least since junior-high school when Shinichi was the class representative of their class. One way or another, he is constantly worrying about his younger half-sister Io.

Io Tamai (玉井 伊欧, Tamai Io^?)

Io is Shinichi's half-sister born from Shinichi's father and his mistress. Her mother enjoys trifling with the Takaura family's assets, which makes Io disdain her. Since her familial life is rather complicated, she has gone through different interests from reading books, to researching black magic, and even ran a website dedicated to aesthetics. She is extremely disgusted by anything pertaining to love or attraction. She has a pet Shiba Inu named Potato.

Reiko Tamai (玉井 麗子, Tamai Reiko^?)

Reiko is Io's mother. Since she is Shinichi's father's mistress, she lives in their house. She constantly has fights with members of the Takaura family or her daughter but has a surprisingly good relationship with Shinichi as she sees him as a good role model for Io.

Nao Tamura (田村 直, Tamura Nao^?)

Voiced by: Ryōhei Nakao

Nao is Yukisada's three-year-older brother. He has a sharp mind and spends much of his time attending university. He also helps tutor Hiroka with her school work. In short, he is a very dependable older brother. He also constantly concerns himself with matters of Japanese lexicon.

Takayuki Tamura (田村 孝之, Tamura Takayuki^?)

Takayuki is Yukisada's three-year-younger brother. He enjoys playing sports and is popular with girls. During his sixth year of elementary school, he devotes much of his time to playing soccer.

Ritsuka Kurokawa (黒川 立夏, Kurokawa Ritsuka^?)

Ritsuka is Komaki's classmate during their first year of high school. Like Komaki, she also has someone she likes and misses due to distance between each other. She is the main character from the short side story "Himitsu Melancholy".

Yōko Shikata (鹿多 瑤子, Shikata Yōko^?)

Yōko is the class representative of Yukisada's class during their first year of high school. She also appears in the short side story "Ohige Girls".

Watashitachi no Tamura-kun began as two-volume series of light novels written by Yuyuko Takemiya and drawn by Yasu. The novels are published by MediaWorks under their Dengeki Bunko publishing label. The first novel was released on June 10, 2005, and the second followed on September 10, 2005. The series comprises three main chapters and two extra side story chapters; the first volume contains the first two main chapters and the first side story chapter, while the second volume contains the third main chapter and the second side story chapter. The first main chapter was serialized in the autumn 2004 edition of Dengeki hp Special, a special edition version MediaWorks' now-defunct light novel magazine Dengeki hp. The second main chapter was serialized in Dengeki hp between thirty-fourth and thirty-fifth volumes.

There were also a series of stories not collected into bound volumes. The first was a short story called "Watashitashi no Chō! Tamura-kun" which appeared in the November 2005 issue of the light novel anthology magazine Dengeki hPa. Another called "Himitsu Melancholy" appeared in the Watashitashi no Tamura-kun First Fan Book which came bundled with the July 2006 issue of Dengeki Comic Gao!.^[2] The last was an additional story added to the drama CD named "Ohige Girls".^[3]

A manga adaptation was serialized in the Japanese shōnen manga magazine Dengeki Comic Gao! between May 27, 2006 and February 27, 2008, published by MediaWorks.^[2][4] The manga takes its story from the light novels that preceded it, and is illustrated by Sachi Kurafuji. The chapters were collected into four bound volumes published under MediaWorks' Dengeki Comics label released between December 16, 2006 and June 27, 2008.

A radio drama based on the main story from the light novels aired on MediaWorks' radio program Dengeki Taishō between December 23, 2006 and January 13, 2007 containing four episodes. The radio drama aired on three Japanese radio stations: Nippon Cultural Broadcasting, Radio Osaka, and Tokai Radio Broadcasting. The drama was later released as a two-disc drama CD set on April 30, 2007; the drama is approximately ninety-five minutes in length.^[3] The CD package also contained an original short story written by the author of the novels named "Ohige Girls", two cell phone straps and charms each, and a computer desktop wallpaper accessible via the second CD.^[3]

Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (俺の妹がこんなに可愛いわけがない, My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute?)

also known as Oreimo for short, is a Japanese light novel series written by Tsukasa Fushimi, with illustrations provided by Hiro Kanzaki. The first volume was published by ASCII Media Works under their Dengeki Bunko imprint in August 2008; as of November 2010, seven volumes have been released. A manga adaptation drawn by Sakura Ikeda started serialization in the March 2009 issue of ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G's Magazine. A 13-episode anime adaptation produced by AIC began airing in Japan in October 2010.

Plot

Kyōsuke Kōsaka, a normal seventeen-year-old high school student, has not gotten along with his younger sister Kirino in years. For longer than he can remember, Kirino has ignored his comings and goings and looked at him with spurning eyes. It seemed as if the relationship between Kyōsuke and his sister, now fourteen, would continue this way forever. One day however, Kyōsuke finds a DVD case of a magical girl anime entitled Hoshikuzu Witch Meruru (星くず☆うぃっちメルル^?, Stardust Witch Meruru) which had fallen in his house's entrance way. To Kyōsuke's surprise, inside the case is a hidden adult video game titled Imōto to Koishiyo! (妹と恋しよっ♪^?, Let's Fall in Love with Little Sister!). Kyōsuke attempts to fish out the culprit who dropped the case by bringing up the topic of magical girl anime at the family dinner table. All that comes out is a strong negative reaction from his parents, especially his anti-otaku policeman father.

That night, Kirino bursts into Kyōsuke's room and, in perhaps the first conversation she has initiated with him in years, says they "have things to talk about." Kirino brings Kyōsuke to her room and shows him an extensive collection of moe anime and lolicon bishōjo games she has been collecting in secret.

Kyōsuke Kōsaka (高坂 京介, Kōsaka Kyōsuke^?)

Kyōsuke is the 17-year-old main character of Oreimo. He has a distant relationship with his sister, feeling that this will never change. However, this suddenly changes when he finds one of her adult games and learns that she is an otaku. Through this, he tries to be a supportive older brother while realizing he himself knew very little about his sister, such as being almost flawless at school to working as a model. Later on he takes up more of his role as an older brother to her, and appears to be able to tell what she is thinking or really meaning to say despite her tsundere personality. Despite this, she is generally the dominant person in their relationship, with Kyōsuke being shown to be openly intimidated by her, only standing up to her in truly serious situations. Kyōsuke prefers to have a relatively peaceful and simple life despite the fact that the drama Kirino brings makes his life anything but peaceful. He also seems to enjoy drinking tea from a carton as he frequently has a glass of it when he gets home.

Kirino Kōsaka (高坂 桐乃, Kōsaka Kirino^?)

Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu

Kirino is Kyōsuke's 14-year-old younger sister. She is mature for her age with a cold, tsundere-like personality. She has a strong "little sister" fetish and owns many adult games with older brother/little sister themes, which she got a job modeling to pay for. Despite this, she states she does not know why she started liking it, though it is suggested that she has a brother complex and is using the games as a surrogate to this. She often denies such feelings and believes the 2D and 3D worlds should be kept separate. Nevertheless, she is shown to be very frustrated when he is with, or shows interest, in other girls such as Manami who she accuses as being "all over" Kyōsuke. Likewise, she frequently forces Kyōsuke to spend time with her, whether it is playing games or taking her out, but denies that she actually enjoys the time they spend together. She uses the screen name Kiririn when with her otaku friends.

Daisuke Kōsaka (高坂 大介, Kōsaka Daisuke^?)

Voiced by: Fumihiko Tachiki

He is Kirino and Kyōsuke's domineering father. He is a high ranking officer in the police and has a no nonsense policy at home. He does not like the fact that Kirino is a model, but allows her to do so if she does well in school. He is severely against otaku, believing them to be a waste of a life, so when he finds out Kirino is one, he orders her to throw away everything otaku-related in her room. It is shown he truly does care for Kirino despite his gruff exterior, as he owns every article and picture of all her accomplishments.

Yoshino Kōsaka (高坂 佳乃, Kōsaka Yoshino^?)

Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe

She is Kirino and Kyōsuke's loving mother. She is aware of her daughter's obsession, as she has referred to her as "my otaku daughter".

Manami is Kyōsuke's childhood friend who wears glasses. She is described as 'plain'. She has a crush on Kyōsuke and blushes to his compliments. She becomes comically blind when she is not wearing her glasses and seems to sprout dog ears when complimented. Due to the time they spend together, the people around them assume they are dating. According to Kyōsuke, her speech patterns resemble that of a grandmother.

Iwao Tamura (田村 いわお, Tamura Iwao^?)

Voiced by: Hiromi Ohtsuda

Iwao is Manami's younger brother.

Saori Makishima (槇島 沙織, Makishima Saori^?) / Saori Bajīna (沙織・バジーナ, Saori Bajīna^?)

Saori is the leader of the "Anime Girls Unite!" group on the Internet, who Kirino meets in a meet-up. She wears very thick glasses (shown as swirls). She is a fan of Gundam and is also a collector of their model kits. She gets along well with Kyōsuke and it is hinted she is from a wealthy family. As Kyōsuke says, Saori is drastically different from how she communicates through the Internet and through phone or speaking with her in person to which she seemingly switches to a refined and sophisticated persona. According to Kyōsuke in the light novels, she is dressed as a typical otaku from television but has the body of a supermodel.

Ruri Gokō (五更 瑠璃, Gokō Ruri^?) / Kuroneko (黒猫^?)

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa

She is another otaku girl who lives near Kirino and often wears gothic lolita clothing based on a character from her favorite anime, even during hot weather. Due to both of their tsundere-type personalities she constantly clashes with Kirino when it comes to anything. However, Kuroneko does care for Kirino. Unlike Kirino who likes little sister-themed games, Kureneko enjoys teen-centered fantasy anime. She often mentions her "dark magic" within the anime, usually to Kirino or to Kyōsuke.

Ayase Aragaki (新垣 あやせ, Aragaki Ayase^?)

Voiced by: Saori Hayami

Kirino's friend and classmate who works as a model alongside her and is also her best friend. Ayase is a friendly, nice, and refined lady, but becomes agitated and somewhat violent at the thought that she is being lied to, which she hates above all else. She tends to believe what she sees on the news. Therefore, she disapproves of anime and manga, calling it a disgusting hobby, especially eroge, due to the media portrayal that otaku will eventually become criminals.

An Internet radio show entitled Ore no Imōto ga (Radio de mo) Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (俺の妹が(ラジオでも)こんなに可愛いわけがない^?) to promote the anime adaptation began streaming on August 13, 2010 via the official website of the anime.^[2][3] The show is hosted by Ayana Taketatsu, who plays Kirino in the anime, and Kana Hanazawa, who plays Kuroneko.^[2] As of November 2010, seven shows have been broadcast, with new episodes being streamed every second and fourth Friday of the month.^[2]

A 13-episode anime adaptation produced by AIC and directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi began airing in Japan on October 3, 2010. The anime retains the voice cast from the drama CD.^[4] Aniplex USA began streaming and simulcasting the series in North America through Anime News Network (ANN), but security issues involving the illegal leaking of episode two online resulted in the stream being placed on hold.^[5][6] The stream of Oreimo returned to ANN with the first four episodes on November 8, 2010.^[7] The opening theme for the anime is "Irony" by ClariS, while each episode features a different ending theme sung by one of the seiyus. The music of the anime is composed by Satoru Kōsaki and a soundtrack will be released on January 12, 2011.^[8]

After a day of shopping around Akihabara, they decide to keep sharing messages while Kyōsuke finishes the game Kirino asked him to complete.

Kirino hangs out with Saori and Kuroneko again and is surprised to find that they do not have to worry about hiding their hobbies. Later that day, Kirino's father learns of her hobby and becomes angry at her. Kirino becomes upset that her hobby has been called "worthless" and runs off, prompting Kyōsuke to catch up with her. After seeing Kirino show no desire to give up a part of her life, Kyōsuke stands up to his father for her. Though he allows Kirino to keep her hobby, he still shows concern for the adult games Kirino had been seen with, so Kyōsuke claims they are his, earning him a punch in the face. Kirino later gives her thanks to Kyōsuke, who is taken aback by her unexpected cuteness.

While Kirino has her school friends over, she receives a package from Saori, unaware it is a collection of dōjinshi, forcing Kyōsuke to stop her from opening it in front of her regular friends, but his attempts to protect it from her land them in an even more awkward situation. Afterwards, one of Kirino's friends, Ayase Aragaki, apologizes to Kyōsuke on Kirino's behalf and exchanges phone numbers with him. As way of apology for the incident, Kirino forces Kyōsuke to take her to Summer Comiket, along with Saori and Kuroneko. When a special data disc Kirino wants is sold out, Kuroneko wins it for her in a beat-em-up contest. Just as they leave the Comiket, they are spotted by Ayase.

When Ayase suspects Kirino is hiding something, she puts pressure on her and eventually discovers her hobby, telling her they can no longer be friends. Noticing Kirino falling into despair, Kyōsuke resumes his life counseling duties and tries talking to Ayase, who says she wants to make up with her, but cannot accept her hobby having seen reports of crimes relating to eroge. Kyōsuke asks for advice from his father, who helps him by giving the full story on those reports. Although Ayase still refuses to make up with Kirino after Kyōsuke reveals the truth behind the news story, Kirino gains the courage to stand up to her and expresses her love for both her friends and eroge. When Ayase still has doubts about her hobby, Kyōsuke puts on a bold act, which causes Ayase to hate him. However, Ayase realizes that her fight with Kirino is pointless in comparison and apologizes to Kirino for her harsh words. Shortly after, Kyōsuke receives a text from Ayase thanking him for helping her and Kirino make up. Ayase also threatens to kill Kyōsuke if he ever does anything indecent to Kirino.

At school, Manami invites Kyōsuke over to her house to try out some sweets made by her family's shop for a Halloween event. One of Kyōsuke's friends points out that he and Manami are pretty close, but Kyōsuke denies there is anything romantic; however, he admits he would not allow any guy to go out with her. Later at Manami's house, Kyōsuke tries out the sweets made by Manami and ends up helping her family prepare for the event; he agrees to spend the night. Manami's grandpa tricks them into sharing the same room that night, which prompts them to talk. Kyōsuke reveals to Manami that if he was confessed to, he would reject the confession in order to maintain his peaceful lifestyle. Meanwhile, back at the Kōsaka house, Kirino is noticeably frustrated that Kyōsuke is staying over at Manami's house.

Having read Kuroneko's fanfiction online, Kirino decides to write some of her own, and the two of them get into a fight concerning their personal tastes (as well as the fact they create characters based on the other who are made into sex slaves then killed off), which continues during a screening of Kirino's favorite anime. Kirino posts her novel online, and soon has a tentative publishing offer. In order to get inspiration for her next novel, Kirino drags Kyōsuke around the city on Christmas Eve for research, where she manages to get him to buy her some earrings. When Kyōsuke claims she is doing this simply for her own self-gratification, she pours a bucket of water over her head to prove otherwise. Later, after Kirino and Kyōsuke rest at a hotel room, Kyōsuke starts to feel a little closer to Kirino as she gives him a warming smile and notices she is wearing the earrings he bought for her.

The Mainichi Shimbun reported that the fourth volume as the light novel which sold the most copies in August 2009.^[10] Anime News Network reported in April 2010 that the first five light novels have sold collectively 920,000 copies in Japan.^[4]
